Using Linux on web server PC?
I am working on a number of websites and have found it EXTREMELY convenient to use Microsoft's Web Deployment Installer to quick-start some of these sites. Most of them are Drupal and Wordpress, and thus do not have any programming that is uniquely "Windows." The problem is, I have no idea how to access the databases for these sites nor even how to back them up.I would like to know if I can go ahead and finish building these sites, with data, settings, and all intact, and then back them up and migrate them to a shared linux hosting account that will likely have cPanel. Any help here will make my world a lot easier.Wanted to add details that ALL of my sites are installed using MySQL - or so I am led to believe. IIS is completely new to me as I've previously been learning using remote hosting; using the Web Deployment Tool is a new thing out of convenience.
Is it easy or possible to completely migrate a website from IIS to shared Linux hosting?
It's mostly only myself, but I do plan to hopefully expand at a later date if I can get a partner or if I need to begin outsourcing work (which is highly expected).Right now, I am only planning to offer web development -- specifically for personal websites, WordPress, and Drupal setups. I might consider doing much more as I learn more technologies, or if I find another partner who can handle them. I also plan to do domain registration for clients and am considering doing hosting after building a client base. Am not concentrated on graphical design.Later (late 2011 at the earliest) I plan to break into non-web-specific programming -- in particular, I'm going to build my own small game-server and release a short line of multiplayer online roleplaying games and might lease the engine out. I also have an interest in doing app development for Windows Phone 7. (( I personally am not interested in iPhones, but I'm sure if I grew, I could find someone to cover that. ))So basically, lots of programming-oriented and tech-related services.I have a basic name picked out, but I'm not sure what to go with just yet. I can't leave it just as it is because there's another company also using the name in a different industry. So, what would be best suited? Would it be something like..[Basename] Solutions[Basename] Technologies.. or something totally different?
What should I call my new small company?

I'm thinking of giving up Windows Xp to a Linux Distro?
Please don't be shocked.I have two PCs. The first one, which has USB port and a serial port, World Wide Web access and DVD/floppy disk reader, is a Windows 2000 professional. The second one (host), which has no USB port, no World Wide Web access, the DVD reader does not seem to work (could it be repaired/replaced?) and the floppy disk works well (but the program I want to transfer is too big to fit), and has a serial port, is a Windows 1998. Is there any way I could transfer my program (screencasting software) from the 2000 to the 1998? There is a connexion between the two computers (serial port DB9 to DB9 female). Is there a chance that I could transfer my software? Or do I need a special program on the 1998 do make it work? Please help me as soon as possible. If you need any other information, or if you have some you believe I am missing, please tell me, I really need the program on my 1998 you have no idea. Thanks in advance.
I'd like to transfer data from a PC to another PC. What would be all my possibilities? (see details below)?
Think about Flash -- you generate a .SWF file that can be hosted on ANY web server (doesn't matter if it is IIS, Apache, Macintrash, Windoze, Linux, etc...) As long as the client web browser has a Flash plugin, it can understand and render the SWF (in general)Is this how Silverlight works? Or do you have to have a .NET (or mono) server?Basically I'm just looking for technologies that work on Windows, Macintrash and Linux. HTML5 looks like it will be nice when its finished, but right now it is severely incomplete and results vary widely between the various browser implementations (remember JavaScript???)Is there another solution to Flash? I'm mainly looking on behalf of Mac users who apparently say Flash support sucks on Apple... (or maybe Steve Jobs is just moaning too loud and distracting me?)Gardner -- can you explain a little more? Why would a .NET upgrade matter? Are you saying the server hosting the Silverlight applet must have access to .NET (or Mono for *nix)?I am still confused. What I am trying to determine is if there are other dependencies in order to host Silverlight. Flash creates SWF. That is all you need for basic flash projects. Does Silverlight create some other format -- say .SLV (I have no idea). Or is there more to it than that? I know hosting an ASP.NET website REQUIRES .NET on the server (and IIS generally). I am trying to understand if MS has coupled Silverlight to require a .NET component on the server or whether it can be hosted by simply copying a file (e.g. .SLV) to a server? Sorry for being confusing.
Silverlight -- does it require .NET to host it?

Do MICROSOFT organized a Sweepstakes? what about MSN promotion 2010?
Alright, how should I begin...My dad runs a Dell PowerEdge 6450 as a domain controller for our home computers and a web server to host pages for non-profits.We had been using Windows Server 2000 as the operating system but after the S.A.M. file for it became corrupt we decided that it was a good time to try something a little bit less 'obsolete' so we went out and downloaded the ISO for Ubuntu Server 10.10 and burned it to a CD (using InfraRecorder).I've been trying to install Ubuntu on the server as a dual boot, but I consistently get this error message early on during the Installation:"Your installation CD-ROM couldn't be mounted. This probably means that the CD-ROM was not in the drive. If so you can insert it and try again."Because I'm here now it should be obvious that the CD-ROM was in fact in the drive...Anyhow, I've tried trouble-shooting via information from older discussions about the issue and I'd read that setting 'ide=nodma' would resolve it in some cases so I went ahead and tried installing with that command concatenated to the installation line (being a Linux newbie I have no idea if I did this correctly but the installer seemed to accept it), but alas the error was encountered as usual. At this point I was advised by a class mate to just try a different version of Linux, so I downloaded Fedora 14 LXDE and burned it to a CD (again, with InfraRecorder).Just as with Ubuntu the Fedora installer begins but quickly encounters problems, this time resulting in this message:"The media check is complete, the result is: FAIL.It is not recommended to use this media.Mount: /dev/sr0: Can't read superblockdracut: FATAL: Failed to mount block device of live imagedracut: Refusing to continueNo root device foundBoot has failed, sleeping forever."After this my dad decided to try creating CD of Fedora with GNOME in stead of LXDE (this time using PowerISO to burn the image to the disk), and 15 minutes into the burn it failed with the following message: "Error writing data.(118-00015030 9a579d5C)"This might be coincidence, but it suggests to me that the problem may lie with the rewrite drive being faulty on the computer we'd been using to burn the CDs.What should I do now?Is the problem with the server's CD-ROM drive? Am I somehow creating bad image burns? Is there some other sort of incompatibility that I'm unaware of?I'd appreciate any opinions on this especially from those with Linux experience, I'm feeling pretty lost right now.To Colanth: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that the installer would even begin if the CD hadn't been created as an ISO.The computer does try to boot from the cds, for both disks the GUI comes up and allows me to choose an action (eg. install Ubuntu Server, install Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud, etc), it is only after making a selection and the disk mount initialization step begins that these problems become apparent.I just tried making a new burn of Ubuntu Server 10.10 with PowerISO, the burn failed identically to the Fedora GNOME attempt, it would seem either PowerISO doesn't work or it's confirming that my RW drive is faulty and I need to try creating the burns on a different computer...
