I'm a newer-than-noob Linux user switching in from Microsoftland. Back there, I needed IIS on a Windows Server in order to run multiple dev and beta web sites simultaneously, and used SQL Server for the databases.I'm looking at switching what I do to Ubuntu now, and see they offer a desktop and server version. Would I need the server to run web services on multiple dev site projects, or can those be hosted (locally) on the desktop version?Also, what's the standard database app for Linux/Unix hosted web sites? Again, would that be runnable on desktop, or does it need the server?I'm looking for free applications, or as cheap as possible. Thanks, and looking forward to being here.

I went to the yahoo hosting service i tried to find the they're email,but i couldn't find it,and they say the can provide email 24/7.But that's not what i'm here for.Yahoo is a verry realiable company so i trust them with the hosting service, so i don't know where should i find out if yahoo hosting supports this type of configuration: Linux/Unix (RedHat, Debian, FreeBSD, Mandrake, etc.) or Windows OS, Apache Web Server, PHP 4.1 and higher (Apache and CGI modules), MySQL 4.1 and higher, GD lib 1.8 and higher, Cron Jobs, ionCube Loader for the license files, open IN and OUT TCP connection on ports 999, 1982 and 1983. All requirements the must. If yes,YAHOO YOUR THE BEST.
Question host configuration?
I zipped up my osCommerce production system from the hosting web server and restored on the Windows system that has similar versions of Apache & MySQL and PHP installed. I have heaps of problems. I wonder if somebody could give me some clue where to start looking.Where could be problems while it works on a Unix system with similar verson of Apache, MySql and PHP installed?

I am looking for a place to host my site on a Unix server that has at least 5 MySQL accounts without having to pay extra as well as having MyPhpAdmin to mange them.A good web control panel would be nice too.Here is the MUST HAVE requirement. It needs to be able to provide monthly billing. That charges you monthly. So many of these host say - $5 a month or whatever, then when you get to check out, they say $60 all at once please.I need a host that actually will take out $5 or whatever a month from you, not charge for a year at once.Any suggestions?
